Thomson Gale Releases Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine

Third edition serves as guide for information on medical topics in easy-to-understand language

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., June 23, 2006 – Thomson Gale, part of the Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC), announces the release of the new Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine.

The third edition of Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine provides detailed information on approximately 1,750 topics. This award-winning Encyclopedia covers a lifetime of issues in language that is easily understood by the lay user, yet also appropriate for allied health students.

Features of the five-volume set include:

  • Approximately 1,750 entries written by medical specialists and reviewed by expert advisers, including more than 100 new entries and 250 updated entries
  • More than 690 full-color illustrations, photographs and tables
  • Biographical and historical sidebars throughout the text
  • Resources section comprised of books, periodicals, Web sites and contact information for national support agencies and organizations

Arranged in disease/disorder and test/ treatment articles, the Encyclopedia lets users comfortably access the information that is most relevant to their particular stage of research. Then, as their need for further information evolves over time, the Encyclopedia provides appropriate content.

Disease/disorder articles contain some or all of the following sections: definitions, descriptions, causes and symptoms, diagnosis, treatments, alternative treatments, prognosis and preventions.

Test/treatment articles contain some or all of the following sections: definitions, purposes, precautions, descriptions, preparation, aftercare, risks, normal results and abnormal results.

The Encyclopedia is available in print and e-Book format.
