Fairfax County Public Schools Go Virtual

With the Addition of Gale Virtual Reference Library’s eBook Platform, Fairfax County Public Schools Take Their Collections Online

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., Sept. 12, 2006 – Fairfax County Public Schools is among the growing number of school systems taking its resources online. By purchasing reference titles housed in Gale Virtual Reference Library, Thomson Gale’s unprecedented eBook platform, Fairfax County Public Schools is providing students with more convenient access to information in their school libraries.

"Our schools have used Thomson Gale reference materials for years," said Susan C. Thorniley, Coordinator of Library Information Services for Fairfax County Public Schools. "Most of these materials are located in the reference sections and are not available for student checkout.  Additionally, only one student at a time can use the books.

"Having the contents available electronically means more students have access to materials, not only at school, but at home as well, which helps ensure equity of access to these reference materials for all of our schools and students," Thorniley continued.

"With Gale Virtual Reference Library, Fairfax County Public School students can read and conduct research in reference books, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from anywhere that has an Internet connection. Additionally, Gale Virtual Reference Library's extensive searchability empowers users to search one reference book or the whole collection at a time."

"Gale Virtual Reference Library offers expanded searching strategies and search results for our students when they are looking for information," Thorniley said.  "All books and databases can simultaneously be searched to get all pertinent information."

"Gale Virtual Reference Library is a powerful resource," said Gordon Macomber, president of Thomson Gale. "The efficiency of Gale Virtual Reference Library’s search capabilities and the convenience students realize when they are able to access the reference materials they want whenever they need them provides schools and their libraries with one more way to stay relevant to students in today’s fast-paced, Internet-focused world."
