Miami University Expands its Library to Include Online Resources Focused on American History and British Newspapers

New Resources Provide insight into American, British History and Culture

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., Oct. 4, 2006 – Miami University recently acquired American History and Culture Online: Sabin Americana, 1500-1926, an online resource offering an up-close perspective on life in the Western Hemisphere, and The Times Digital Archives, a fully-searchable news archive from the “world’s newspaper of record.” Both resources are created by Thomson Gale, part of the Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC).

“These resources provide our students and faculty with a unique and interesting view into the past,” said Bill Wortman, Humanities Librarian. “Combined, American History and Culture Online: Sabin Americana, 1500-1926 and The Times Digital Archives include more than 600 years of historical documents, including newspapers, books, pamphlets, sermons, maps and literature to enrich and deepen their research.”

American History and Culture Online: Sabin Americana, 1500-1926

Drawing together Primary Source Microfilm’s microfiche edition of Joseph Sabin’s Bibliotheca Americana and other major sources, American History and Culture Online: Sabin Americana, 1500-1926 consists of works about the Americas published not only in the United States but from across the globe. This collection of important and hard-to-find primary sources profiles the society, politics, culture, religious beliefs, and contemporary opinions at home and abroad during a period of more than 400 years.

American History and Culture Online: Sabin Americana, 1500-1926 contains more than 6 million pages of text about North, Central and South America, the Arctic and Antarctica, and the West Indies. This resource offers original accounts of exploration, pioneering, settlement, the western movement, military actions, Native Americans, slavery and abolition.

The Times Digital Archives

The Times Digital Archive is a full-image online archive of every page published by The Times [London] from 1785-1985. The text within the images is fully searchable at the article level. Users can easily search news articles, obituaries, advertising and classifieds — virtually everything that appeared in the newspaper.

Category headings and subjects of interest researchers will discover in The Times Digital Archive include advertising, book reviews, government, law, letters to the editor, obituaries, sport, theater and the Times’ famous crossword puzzle.
