Gale Virtual Reference Library Adds New Publishing Partners, Launches Spanish eBook Program
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., Dec. 11, 2006 – Thomson Gale, part of the Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC), recently added new publishing partners to Gale Virtual Reference Library, Thomson Gale’s unprecedented platform for delivering electronic reference material such as eBooks. With the addition of two of these partners – Ediciones Akal and Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) – Thomson Gale launches its Spanish eBook program. The content will be available in early 2007.
Established in 1973, Ediciones Akal is based in Madrid, Spain, and has published more than 3,000 titles in the fields of anthropology, arts, economics, history, music, philosophy, politics, religion and social Sciences. Eleven of Ediciones Akal’s eBooks will be available on Gale Virtual Reference Library.
Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is an international public health agency with 100 years of experience in working to improve health and living standards in the countries of the Americas. It serves as the specialized organization for health of the Inter-American System, the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization and enjoys international recognition as part of the United Nations system. PAHO has more than 700 book titles in print.
PAHO’s 30 eBook titles will be bundled into a set called La OPS colección sobre la salud mundial (The PAHO World Health Collection). These titles join a Scribner title, Enfermedades y Trastornos de la Salud (Human Diseases and Conditions) in providing Spanish speakers with access to health information online.

Brill Academic Publishers: With offices in the Netherlands and Boston, Brill Academic Publishers publishes more than 100 journals and 500 new books and reference works each year concentrated in the fields of: Ancient Near East and Egypt; Middle East, Asian and Islamic Studies; Medieval and Early Modern Studies; Biblical and Religious Studies; Social Sciences and Science and Biology. The six Brill Academic Publishers titles that will be available in Gale Virtual Reference Library are in the field of religion.
Indiana University Press: Founded in 1950, Indiana University Press has long been recognized as a leading academic publisher specializing in the humanities and social sciences and dedicated to serving the world of scholarship and culture. Indiana University Press has more than 1,700 book titles in print; the two forthcoming Gale Virtual Reference Library eBook titles are Encyclopedia of Women & Religion in North America and Latinas in the United States: A Historical Encyclopedia.
The Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS): Based in Singapore, ISEAS is a regional research center dedicated to the study of socio-political, security and economic trends and developments in Southeast Asia. The Publications Unit of the ISEAS has published nearly 2,000 scholarly books and journals since 1972, focusing on economics, politics and social issues in Southeast Asia. Eight titles from ISEAS will be available through Gale Virtual Reference Library in 2007.
Scarecrow Press: Headquartered in Lanham, Maryland, Scarecrow Press is known for its scholarly bibliographies, historical dictionaries (of countries, religions, organizations, wars, movements, cities and ancient civilizations), library science monographs, and reference works in the humanities, particularly music and film.
The 11 titles planned for eBook release in Gale Virtual Reference Library include historical dictionaries of the Civil War, Afghanistan, Iraq and the Arab Israeli Conflict, as well as titles on airlines, television and the cinema.
