Thomson Gale Releases New Biographical Resources

Titles Spotlight Notable Men and Women in History, Science, Multicultural Studies

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., Dec. 12, 2006 – Thomson Gale, part of the Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC), announces the release of new biographical resources, including Dictionary of Women Worldwide: 25,000 Women through the Ages. Other biographical titles recently released include American Men & Women of Science, 23rd edition; Scribner Encyclopedia of American Lives, Vol. 7 and Notable Black American Men, Book II.

With the release of Dictionary ofWomen Worldwide, Thomson Gale has again partnered with Yorkin Publications, the same team that produced the Dartmouth Award-winning Women in World History, to offer a similarly extraordinary resource. It includes more than 25,000 concise, fact-filled biographical entries providing instant access to a particular woman’s personal background and significance in history. While traditional dictionaries devote little space to women, and then only the most famous, Dictionary of Women Worldwide provides researchers and fact-seekers with a vast array of noteworthy women from throughout time and the world, including rulers, royalty, lawyers, politicians, soldiers, heroines, pacifists, resistance fighters, financiers, entrepreneurs, philanthropists, investors, entertainers, authors and more. This three-volume set also includes era/chronological, geographic/nationality and occupational indexes, as well as 89 genealogical charts.

Considered the standard source in its field, the eight-volume American Men & Women of Science is a biographical dictionary of the significant players in the physical, biological and related sciences. The 23rd edition includes biographical entries on approximately 135,000 living North American scientists providing birth date; birthplace; field of specialty; education; honorary degrees; current position; professional and career information; awards and other important information regarding the highlighted individual.

Volume Seven in the Scribner Encyclopedia of American Lives series includes profiles of more than 300 prominent individuals who died between 2003-2005, including Bob Hope, Ronald Reagan, Johnny Cash, Katherine Hepburn, Edward Teller, Susan Sontag, and Rosa Parks. Each of these signed essays, written by individuals with a passion for history, traces the life of the entrant with careful attention to historical context.

The Notable Black American Men series profiles contemporary and historic figures and covers the most prominent newsmakers as well as lesser-known individuals. Each volume offers full biographical entries, portraits, addresses for living listees and recommended sources for further study. Entrants represent virtually every field of endeavor, including government, politics, education, sports, law and the arts. Book II includes 300 original entries on new figures, including Barack Obama , Ralph David Abernathy, Jimi Hendrix, Neil Tyson, Richard Pryor, Marion Barry and many more.
